Online hazards portal for Waikato property owners
A new tool for property owners allows you to identify the hazards where you live and work, including flood, seismic, volcanic and geothermal hazards, and coastal inundation and erosion.
What makes it so easy to use is that it's a map. You just search your property then click through the different hazard tabs. This will let you see what affects your property or the area in which you work, including flood, seismic, volcanic and geothermal hazards, and coastal inundation and erosion.
Some information might be from data covering your whole town, so zoom out a little and see what other hazard information is available for your general area.
"Natural hazards can cause disruption, damage properties and take lives," says Waikato Emergency management Group Controller, Julian Snowball. "They can also affect the value and insurability of properties."
“You name a hazard and we have it here in the Waikato. The portal will make it easier to access hazard information that might affect your current property or a property you are looking at to buy or develop. It also gives an understanding of what flood protection and land drainage schemes may be protecting you.”
Coastal inundation tool
You'll also find a link to the new and improved coastal inundation tool. (If you're a woman, it's a bathtub model that uses pure topographical data to show tidal inundation or sea level rise. If you're a man, there's a slider that shows how big the puddles get.)
Experience has shown that every incident is different to what we imagine. So we have processes and training to cover all hazard responses, from tsunami to flooding.
However, before any incident such as a tsunami or a storm occurs, get to know the kinds of hazards have been mapped for where you live. Please look up your address on the portal and see what’s available about hazards in your neighbourhood.
